Mass promotion in Army, Air Force


The Army has announced the promotion of sixteen Brigadier-Generals to the rank of Major-Generals after a meeting last Thursday that was chaired by Minister of Defence, Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, at the defence ministry.

Similarly, over sixty officers in the rank of Colonel have also been promoted to the rank of Brigadier-Generals, while over nine hundred others in the ranks of Majors and Lieutenant-Colonels have also been promoted to the ranks of Lieutenant- Colonels and Colonels respectively.

Among those promoted to the rank of Major-Generals, include, the Joint Task Force(JTF) Commander, Warri, Brigadier-General Lawrence Ngubane, K. Role, Commander, Army Head Quarters Garrison, Abuja, G.G. Umoh, of the Department of Army Standards and Evaluation(DASE), Gana, of the Defence Head Quarters, Edi, deputy commandant, Nigerian Army Training Area(NACAS), Kachia, Chong, Director of Military Intelligence(DMI), Idoko, commandant 33 Brigade, Maiduguri, Essien, Deputy commandant, NASME, Makurdi, O. Obassa, Defence Adviser, New York, and Usman, commandant, Supply and Transport(S&T), Benin.

Others are, Abidoye, contingent commander, in Liberia , S. Maina, PGSO, National Defence College , Abuja , Wali, of the Nigerian Army Signals, Ejeh, commandant, Nigerian Army Medical Corps, M.D. Isa, and Ibokette.
Those promoted from the rank of colonels to brigadier-Generals include, the Director, Army Public Relations, and former ADC to president Olusegun Obasanjo, Solomon Giwa-Amu as well as the Director, Defence Information, M.D Yusuf.
In a related development, the Nigerian Air Force has also announced the promotion of ten Air Vice Marshalls, 27 commodores, fifty Group-Captains and over 40 Wing Commanders.

Among the new AVM include Femi Ayeni. S.A. Leks, T. Okorodudu, J.O. Babalola, G. Odesola, A.T. Muazu, Dick Iruenabere, W.A. Ogujiofor and A. Okanlawon.
Those promoted to the rank of Air Commodore, include former Director of Public Relations, I.A. Kure, M. Morgan, A. Iya, E.E. O, A.N. Amosu as well as the former chairman of the Military Pension Board, A.B. Kachiro, while N.O Oyibo, J.A Ogunbiyi, ,A. Guobadia and C.N Udeagwu among others were promoted to the rank of Group-Captains.

Unlike other promotion exercise, where no fewer than ten Generals will retire from the Army, only one Major- General will retire in this exercise. He is Major-General Yaduma, former commandant of the ICCI Jaji, who is presently serving at the Defence Head Quarters, Abuja .
The newly promoted officers are expected to be decorated with their new ranks later this week.
