Former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has declared that democracy would have been murdered in Nigeria under the leadership of President Olusegun Obasanjo if the Nigerian judiciary had not adhered strictly to the tenets of the rule of law.
Atiku, the Action Congress (AC) presidential candidate, who played host to Rivers State AC governorship candidate, Prince Tonye Princewill, in his residence in Ganye, Adamawa State, charged younger politicians to persevere and be persistent in their political ideology.
According to Atiku, despite the odds against him and the travails he went through in his political career, strict adherence to the tenets of politics and belief in social contract with people had kept him afloat.
He said that AC was making headway in politics in Nigeria because it identifies with the people in saving them from the quagmire of oppression by unpatriotic Nigerians.
Atiku appealed to the like of Prince Princewill to be consistent and persistent in their political beliefs despite all odds against them, stressing that with perseverance there would be light at the end of the tunnel.
'No success comes in an easy way in life. You have to remain persistent and consistent in what you believe in before democracy can thrive in Nigeria.
'In the face of difficulty, travails and challenges, be consistent with your political beliefs."
According to him, the judiciary would vindicate the AC and return all its mandates across the country allegedly stolen by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including the governorship seat in Adamawa State.
'The former president, Olusegun Obasanjo subverted democracy to humiliate me in the state and the country in general," Atiku stressed.
He, however, expressed hope that the AC would triumph through the judicial process, just as he had earlier triumphed in various cases with Obasanjo and the PDP.
Atiku also attributed his political success to his adherence to the principle of law, political tenets and desire to see to it that the norms were not only propagated but also embraced by Nigerians.
He added that politics thrives in Nigeria because the judiciary knows its onions and adhers to the rule of law.
The guest, Prince Princewill said he shared Abubakar's political ideals and would join hands with him to sustain the ideals of democracy.
He congratulated Abubakar for fighting for the sustenance of democratic ideals and growth of democracy in Nigeria, adding: 'In short, we are proud to be associated with you and your great vision for the emancipation of our people in the Niger Delta and the country at large."
