Kanu: I won't rush Pompey return

Portsmouth striker Nwankwo Kanu has refused to set a target for his comeback from a knee injury despite the seemingly long wait by his fans and the count that he could return this weekend.

Portsmouth striker Nwankwo Kanu has refused to set a target for his comeback from a knee injury despite the seemingly long wait by his fans and the count that he could return this weekend.

The Nigerian former Ajax, Inter Milan and Arsenal star will only confirm that the knee, after a trip to see a specialist in France, is getting much better.

"It is much better now and I am doing some jogging," Kanu said after one of such light work in England yesterday.

"It is very difficult when you have been scoring goals in a successful team and then something happens to disrupt that but I don't want to rush back before I'm really ready even though I'm finding it frustrating not to be involved."

It is almost certain that Kanu will be unavailable again for Pompey's home clash with West Ham this Saturday evening - and that leaves the way open for Zimbabwean Benjani Mwaruwari to continue his remarkable purple patch in front of goal. The Zimbabwean appears to have taken the chance of Kanu's absence with more than both hands as he has scored seven goals to lead the Premier League scorer's chart.

Apart from missing his league actions, the knee injury kept the Super Eagles captain off the Nigeria friendly match against Mexico this month. It is, however, hoped that the tall player will soon return to action following the treatment and light trainings that he has began.
