Global Education Counselling (GEC) has opened a week-long education fair in Abuja and three other states in the country in the spirit of public-private sector collaboration to expand university admission opportunities for Nigerian students.

Director of Admission, GEC, Mrs. Abolaji Osime, who disclosed this to newsmen in Lagos said it was worrisome that the 89 public and private universities in the country could admit only 13 per cent of the total number of applicants seeking university admission.
To bridge the wide gap and meet the challenges it posed, Mrs. Osime said GEC had struck a strategic partnership with some renowned United Kingdom universities which are ready to offer admissions to interested Nigerian students at no extra stress in processing their admissions.
To facilitate the procurement and processing of admission, Osime said five of these United Kingdom universities would participate in the education fair that started on October 8 and would end on the 13.
The fair which opened in Kaduna on Monday, would move to Abuja today for two days and to South, Lagos on October 11 for another two days. The final leg will be in Ibadan on Saturday, October 13 where the curtain would be drawn on the fair.
She listed the participating universities as: University of Bedfordshire, Liverpool, John Moore University, University of Worcester, University of Hull and University of Debrecen Medical School, Hungary.
On the unique feature of the fair, the GEC director said it would provide excellent opportunity for potential applicants to meet face-to-face with admission and counseling officers of the various universities who would hold talks with them on the courses available in their institutions, verify certificates submitted by them and give instant admissions to qualified ones.
She said the admission requirements were same for Nigerian universities, but added that the sister outfit, Global International College runs foundation and advance level courses for some of these universities.
She stated that no fewer than 700 Nigerian students had used this medium to gain admission into United Kingdom varsities.
Also speaking at the occasion, GEC Director of International Studies, Mr Theo Theodorou, who liases with these universities unfolded the scholarship opportunities available for indigent but brilliant students at the universities.
Theodorou disclosed that the new laws in UK now allow foreign students to work for one year after the completion of their degrees.
