Super Eagles skipper Nwankwo Kanu has threatened to take legal action against an English tabloid, over a report published on Monday alleging that court bailiffs were set to enter his expansive London home over his failure to settle a 11,000 debt.
Super Eagles skipper Nwankwo Kanu has threatened to take legal action against an English tabloid, over a report published on Monday alleging that court bailiffs were set to enter his expansive London home over his failure to settle a 11,000 debt.
According to the report, the debt is owed a Nigerian,
Gabriel Nwolise, who claimed that he provide chauffeur services, for the Portsmouth striker two years ago when Kanu was with West Brom.
Nwolise alleged that after the footballer agreed to
pay him 1,000-a-week for his services Kanu failed to
pay him a penny after driving him around for six
months.
After all efforts to get him to pay up failed, Nwolise then sought legal redress with a court ordering the former Arsenal star to pay.
However, according to the report, after Kanu ignored the court order to settle the debt in August, a judge gave the green light for bailiffs to step in.
But reacting to the report, Kanu said last night that he had already instructed his lawyer to write the tabloid demanding a retraction and apology.
He said, Ive told my lawyer to demand an apology and retraction from the newspaper; failing which I will head to court to clear my name because there is no truth in the report.
Im shocked that the writer rushed such a story without hearing my side. I thought that is supposed to be the standard practice in journalism. Im ready to take this up because I have a name to protect."
While not denying that he knows Nwolise, Kanu,
however, insisted that he had never entered into any
formal contract with the chauffeur because he believed he was just helping a fellow Nigerian in need.
