VC explains Ilorin Varsity's dons sack


THE out going Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Shamusideen Amali, has explained that the Federal Government Policies of 1986 and 1992 forbidding all universities from spending their recurrent expenditures on their Secondary Schools and the New education policy of Universal Basic Education (UBE) led to the sack of the 63 teachers of the University of Ilorin Secondary School.

ILORIN - THE out going Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Shamusideen Amali, has explained that the Federal Government Policies of 1986 and 1992 forbidding all universities from spending their recurrent expenditures on their Secondary Schools and the New education policy of Universal Basic Education (UBE) led to the sack of the 63 teachers of the University of Ilorin Secondary School.

The Chairman, University of Ilorin Secondary School Governing Board, Professor Lucky Edungbola, on behalf of the Vice- chancellor disclosed this while addressing newsmen on the development stated that all staff of Unilorin Secondary School were disengaged and their terminal entitlements were already being processed for payment. He said they could reapply if they wished.

According to him, there is a need to restructure University of Ilorin Secondary School into Upper Basic Education 7 to 9 and Senior Secondary School 1 to 111, adding that the teaching staff of the School who were represented on the Governing Board were fully involved in the restructuring exercise.

Professor Edungbola stressed that Unilorin Secondary School Governing Board, through extensive research by visiting other institutions, presented a memorandum to the University of Ilorin Governing Council to approve the restructuring of the Unilorin Secondary School and grant it the status to operate as a University Private School which enjoys a higher degree of autonomy in terms of management.
'New staff under the new conditions of service is already engaged, including 28 disengaged staff that re-applied for the job after advertisement for recruitment of new staff under the new conditions of service were published," he said.
