Residents of Abimbola road/ Bello Street in Ilasamaja were on Monday morning practically under siege when armed robbers, numbering around 10, raided a bank at Abimbola House, in Isolo/Ilasamaja Industrial Estate, leaving one person dead and several others with gunshot wounds.
The raid, which started around 11 am and went on till just before 12 noon, saw the robbers carting away boxes allegedly filled with money from the bank. They arrived in a Mercedes Benz 190 and Toyota Corolla, from which they conducted their operation.
The person killed is suspected to be a staff of one of the companies, which shares the same building with the bank, while those injured included on-lookers and other staff. The robbers did not seem in a hurry, as they strolled around in front of the bank, going in and out with bags and boxes, randomly shooting in the direction where residents of the area had initially gathered due to the sound of the gunshots.
They eventually left in a constant burst of gunfire that sent residents scrambling for cover.
Angry residents, however, gathered again when some thirty minutes later, a swarm of police arrived in several buses at the scene totting guns, making some of the residents to wonder aloud, why the police were just arriving, after the robbers had operated for more than 30 minutes.
