Nigerian fraudster may be deported

A Nigerian man faces deportation after trying to open a bank account in Northampton by using a forged passport.

Jibola Olayiwole, aged 25, was arrested when he produced the fake passport while trying to access an account at the HSBC bank, off The Drapery in Northampton.

He appeared at Northampton Crown Court yesterday where he pleaded guilty to a single charge of possessing a false identity document on August 6.

Michael Waterfield, prosecuting, said the forged passport was spotted when Olayiwole, of Henry Bird Way, Southbridge, Northampton, applied to access an account he had opened on the internet.

The court heard that on the day after his arrest, he applied for political asylum to remain in the UK.

Judge Thomas Corrie adjourned sentencing to allow the Crown Prosecution time to verify Olayiwole's true identity and to determine whether he has any previous convictions.

The judge said: "We have got to know who he is and it may well be deportation notice will have to be served."

Olayiwole was further remanded in custody until a sentencing hearing next month.
