The City of Lagos recorded yet another calamity on Thursday morning as an extension of a five-storey building collapsed in Martins Street, Lagos, killing one and injuring about 20 persons.

The incident occurred at about 11. a.m. barely three months after three other buildings collapsed in the state, with the highest fatality recorded in 31/32 Egerton Street, Oke-Arin District, where five people, including two pregnant women and a little girl of three, died.

The 20 people rescued from the debris of the collapsed building were rushed to the Lagos State General Hospital, Lagos for treatment.
The General Manager of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident, but said no death was recorded.

He told Daily Sun that immediately the agency received a distress call from residents of the area, all the stakeholders involved in rescue operations, in emergency situation, moved immediately to the site.
The LASEMA boss said that although no fatality was recorded at the scene, rescue operation would continue till all the grounds were covered by rescue operators.

" No death has been recorded since rescue operation commenced, but about 20 people were rescued from the rubble of the collapsed building by LASEMA, Red Cross and Civil Defence officials, who are all stakeholders in emergency situations. They have since received comprehensive medical treatment from the state's general hospital.

He however, disclosed that pending when the rescue operation would last, all areas leading to the crash site would remain cordoned off to make rescue operation easier.
" All the stakeholders are going to work round the clock to make sure nobody is trapped in the rubble. To the best of our knowledge and from information gathered so far from residents of the ill-fated building, nobody has been declared missing," he added.
