President Umaru Yar'Adua will on Sunday leave the country for the United States to attend his first-ever United Nations General Assembly, which opens in the New York headquarters of the global organisation the next day.

President Umaru Yar'Adua will on Sunday leave the country for the United States to attend his first-ever United Nations General Assembly, which opens in the New York headquarters of the global organisation the next day.

The president, who would be accompanied by some top functionaries of his administration, is expected to address the august body on some important developmental issues affecting not only Nigeria , but also Africa in general.

Competent sources also said he would use the opportunity, once again, to restate his appeal to the developed world to honour its pledge to assist developing countries tackle some of the major problems confronting them and stalling their development, particularly the fight against the HIV/AIDS and other diseases as well as poverty alleviation.

While in the US, President Yar'Adua will hold meetings with the American business community during which he would unfold his administration's seven-point agenda and efforts being made to attract foreign investments and ensure adequate security of such investments.
Daily Sun gathered that the president would also hold private audience with specific world leaders on issues of common interests and bilateral relations before returning home next Thursday.
