Cheap cellphone handset soon •Chinese firm to produce 300,000 locally


As from May this year, Nigeria would join the league of telephone hand-set manufacturers, the Vice President of the ZTE, a Chinese firm has said.

As from May this year, Nigeria would join the league of telephone hand-set manufacturers, the Vice President of the ZTE, a Chinese firm has said.

This development would help generate employment and make cell phones more affordable to the people, Me ye Weimin told President Olusegun Obasanjo at a meeting in Shanghai Sunday.

According to the report from the Asian City, Weimin was quoted to have said that the factory which would be sited in Abuja, would commence production with initial 300,000 handsets annually.

The Vice-President stated that the goal of the company was to eventually increase production to one million sets over a rersonable period of time.

President Obasanjo met with three major Chinese investors in Nigeria during his two-day visit to Shanghai Province, the industrial hub of China.

Another major investor, Huawei Technologies told the president that the company had also concluded plans to invest more than $20 million in Nigeria for the assembly of the telephone terminals.

The group, which was led by My Ryan Chen said that work would start soon and that by November 2006, the company would be commissioned.

The third firm, Alcatel, already in the country was preparing to establish a software development outfit to compliment its current initiative.

Obasanjo told the three delegations who assisted him that Nigerians have all the expertise required to collaborate fully with their international partners "almost in all fields of human endeavours".

He also said his government was keen on "drawing urgently from its relationship with China to boost economic development." The President then pledged strong support to interested foreign investors willing to establish employment generating ventures in the country.
