Yar'Adua proposes N77bn supplementary budget


The National Assembly on Wednesday formally received the proposal from President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua for this year's Supplementary Appropriation Bill, tagge: '2007 Appropriation Amendment Bill and 2007 Supplementary Appropriation Bill, Part II."

The covering letter accompanying the budget proposal was read on the floor of both houses on Wednesday.
Although details of the bill was sketchy as at press time, Daily Sun gathered that President Yar'Adua is asking for N1.5 billion to tackle the Niger Delta crisis.

Apart from this amount, which was put under the sub-head, 'Blast Shielding for Niger Delta Rekitting," the president is asking for another N1.5 billion for defence, even as he is requesting the lawmakers to approve N4 billion for him as security vote, with the SSS having N1.25 billion.

Also for public sector reform, the president is requesting N20 billion and N21.6 billion is to get for Local contractors, while the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), N1billion. The total budget was put at about N77 billion.

In his letter to both chambers of the National Assembly, President Yar'Adua noted that the budget proposal was 'consistent with our medium-term fiscal objectives which seek to provide additional resources to support reform in the public service."
