20 killed on Lagos-Ibadan expressway

NO fewer than 20 people lost their lives in an auto accident on Monday on Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

NO fewer than 20 people lost their lives in an auto accident on Monday on Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

According to the Nigerian Tribune investigations, the accident, which occurred at about 12.00 p.m. at a big gully at a spot between Ogun and Oyo, involved a commercial bus heading towards Lagos from Ibadan and a trailer truck coming from the Lagos end of the road.Reports stated that a tanker, loaded with a petroleum product, suspected to be diesel, inadvertently spilled a large quantity of the product on the road, prior to the accident, thereby making the road slippery for vehicles.

The spot at which yesterday's accident happened, which, according to eye-witnesses, claimed 20 lives, had become a death trap in recent times, as several other vehicles had been involved in accidents on the same spot, claiming several lives.

It will be recalled that last Thursday, at the same Lagos/Ibadan expressway in Ogere area, no fewer than five persons were confirmed dead while 13 others sustained varying degrees of injuries in an accident.

The accident, which involved an 18-seater Toyota Hiace bus marked Ondo XC 551 KKA, occurred at about 3.45 p.m. when one of the front tyres burst.

The bus was reportedly heading towards Ibadan from Ojota in Lagos when it somersaulted, throwing out all the passengers, including a two-year-old girl who sustained serious injuries.

One of the injured passengers, who identified herself as Mrs. Balogun, had told the Nigerian Tribune that the passengers had been complaining about the driving of the driver before the accident occurred.

She said the driver refused to reduce the speed despite the complaints from almost all the passengers.
