THE Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Prof Charles Soludo, yesterday, said the apex bank is planning to import 27 armoured tank carriers as the bank's contribution to check increasing rate of bank robberies in the country.
ILORIN - THE Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Prof Charles Soludo, yesterday, said the apex bank is planning to import 27 armoured tank carriers as the bank's contribution to check increasing rate of bank robberies in the country.
He said the armoured tanks would be distributed to all banks in the country.
'We intend to distribute these armoured tanks to banks in the country as part of our contribution to check bank robberies.
'You can imagine an armed robbery gang carrying AK 47 rifles and our policemen few hundreds of bullets from these people. They (policemen) are humans, the project is capital intensive but we are doing it."
The CBN governor also spoke on the creation of commercial courts in the country to check bank fraud, and said lawyers should play a role in revamping Nigeria's economy.
Professor Soludo also said no amount of magic can change the economic situation in the country except some drastic measures are adopted.
Besides Soludo's speech, some lawyers also called on the electoral reform committee inaugurated by President Yar'Adua on Tuesday not to commence work until all electoral matters are dispensed with at the Tribunals.
In his paper titled: 'Financial Sector Strategy 2020: The Legal Imperatives," the CBN governor said that 'financial reforms in the country could not succeed without legal support."
Soludo said the apex bank had already fixed the infrastructure by making the country's banking sector solid and one of the fastest growing in Africa.
He, however, said that the commercial courts were needed to consolidate and make the reforms work and grow better.
Soludo said if courts were set up to exclusively try and adjudicate in financial and economic cases, those who have formed the habit of committing financial crimes and using the law to thwart all efforts at punishing them would desist.
