Acting on the information, detectives were said to have moved to the scene, where they arrested Sunday Agunda, who distributed fake currencies. He was used as a bait to arrest other members of the syndicate.
Those now held are Ambrose Okio, Gbenga Akingboro, Kemi Jacob, Sunday Agunda and Jacob Orogbo. The prime suspect, Jonah Jacob, fled before the arrival of the police, who recovered a printing machine, chemical, 194 fake N1000 and 50 fake N500 notes in his house.
Agunda, who was caught distributing the fake currency at Ikeja, said Jonah printed the money.
"We've been at it for a year, but I left after I realized it was illegal.
The person who introduced us into the business is dead. He used to provide such money for people that ask for it, but I don't use it myself."
Jacob Orogbo, father of the fleeing suspect, said he got to know that his son was involved in such criminal act last June. According to him, someone alerted him to what Jonah was doing.
"I told him that this was what I heard he was into. I warned him to desist from such act beginning from that day. I told him not to bring scandal to the family name."
Kemi Jacob, wife to the suspect, was also picked by the police. Also, Gbenga Akingboro, Kemi's brother, was arrested when he came over to visit his sister. Police claimed that he was also printing fake currencies as he was trained by Jonah.
"He is my sister's husband, but I work at Abule-Egba as a printer in a factory. I swear to Almighty God that I never knew Jonah was into printing of fake money. I know that it is only God that will save me from this problem. Jesus is alive! I only know that Jonah prints pamphlets and handbills, "he lamented.
Ambrose Okio, Jonah's relation, said he had gone on a visit only for policemen to pounce on him. He said: "They started beating me. They said Jonah sent me to check on them. They said he was printing fake money."
Police investigation revealed that the fake currencies were taken to the northern part of the country for circulation.
