Former Governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, has called on President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua to as a matter of urgency tackle the embarrassing security situation in the country.
Alhaji Jakande, who spoke during a send forth party in honour of former Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ilupeju Police Station, Adegoke Fayode, by Ilupeju Township Association, said 'the security of life and property is very far. There are cases of murder, assassination and armed robbery. It is so unprecedental in the history of the country."
Jakande, who was flanked by former military administrator of the state, Mobolaji Johnson and Dr Segun Ogundimu, said: 'I want to appeal to President Yar'Adua to take the issue of security as the greatest concern of his administration. He should equip the police because unequipped police is like a toothless dog. He needs to improve the welfare of the security operatives."
Speaking on the activities of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), he said 'the EFCC started well, but now it has proved that it is a tool in the hands of the government. EFCC should go back to the constitution and act within the ambit of the law."
He called on Nigerians to give information on criminal activities in their areas to the police.
On his part, Ogundimu, who described the DPO as the best thing that happened to the Ilupeju community, said 'during Kayode's time, crime rate reduced drastically within Ilupeju. I want to advise the new DPO to toe the line of Kayode who did not let us down.
We had confidence in him and that is why we gave him useful information that helped him in policing the area."
