A middle aged man was on Monday, jailed by an Abuja magistrate's court to six months imprisonment or an option of N5000 fine for stealing a car.

Chief magistrate, Sunday D. Ochima sentenced Ahmed Idris for bolting away with a car belonging to a man that accommodated him for a night.

During the trial, the prosecutor, Corporal Abdullahi Adamu told the court that Idris stole a Honda Civic (‘92 model) car with registration number DF 766 SMK with its original particulars and the sum of N8, 000 belonging to one Mr. Aliyu Umar of Flat 187 CBN Estate Wuse 11, Abuja.

He said the accused was introduced to the complainant by one Ibrahim as his guest who had just come to Abuja to attend an interview on July 22, 2007 and would leave the next day. "Umar allowed the accused to pass the night in his room, and while he was asleep, Idris stole the car key with the said money, locked him in the room and made away with the car," the prosecutor said.

When the police report was read to the hearing of the accused, he pleaded guilty and asked for forgiveness. He confessed that he had started inter state taxi services with the vehicle for a while before he finally sold it.

"I travelled to Kaduna, Kano and Gombe with the car before selling it in Lagos" He said.

The complainant told City News that they recovered his car in Lagos after the accused sold it for N250, 000. "The car is in the custody of Zone 3 police divisional office and will be soon released to me."
