Nigerians have more confidence in INEC than EFCC, ICPC - Report

A study by the International Foundation for Election Systems has indicated that Nigerians have more confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission than the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission.

A study by the International Foundation for Election Systems has indicated that Nigerians have more confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission than the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission.

This is in spite of consistent condemnation of the commission over the alleged shoddy handling of the April general election believed to be marked by widespread irregularities.

According to a report of the study, while 58 per cent of Nigerians have confidence in INEC, only 55 per cent of Nigerians trust the EFCC. The ICPC is at the rear with 50 per cent approval rating.

The report of the study was presented at a conference on "2007 Elections and the Way Forward" in Abuja on Wednesday.

A Washington-based IFES official, Dr. Karen Burkle, who presented the report, said the study was conducted among 2,410 Nigerian adults before the elections and among 2,416 Nigerian adults after the elections.

She said though the approval ratings of the three agencies dropped after the elections, a larger proportion of the sampled population still trust in INEC.

INEC also purportedly fared better in terms of efficiency with 52 per cent of the public saying the electoral body was effective in the discharge of its duties. The rating was, however, 56 per cent before the elections.
