Again, robbers raid bank, kill 8, escape unhurt


The siege to Lagos by robbers that has lasted some weeks continued yesterday at a bank in the Mile 12 area where they struck and left several persons lying dead after their operation.

The siege to Lagos by robbers that has lasted some weeks continued yesterday at a bank in the Mile 12 area where they struck and left several persons lying dead after their operation.
The gang of hoodlums stormed the bank, shot dead eight people and crippled the bank manager with bullets.

Among the casualties was a mobile policeman who was on guard when the robbers stormed at about 10.30am and escaped with their loot.

Eyewitness account said that most of those killed were outside the bank premises who gave the robbers a chase and in a desperate move to escape shot into the crowd. Police however claimed that only two people were killed and that the robbers escaped because they scattered in various directions.
Shortly after the robbery, street urchins set a police post at mile 12 area on fire, protesting police inability to stop the bandits and the killing of a bus conductor by stray bullets.

Saturday Sun gathered that the gun battle between the police and robbers lasted for more than 30 minutes forcing residents to remain locked indoors while commercial activities was brought to an abrupt stop.
The state police command has drafted several patrol teams including an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) to the area. The bank was also closed for the day.
