A Chinese woman was shot dead by armed robbers on her way back to accommodations in the Nigerian capital of Lagos on Thursday, China's Consulate General in Lagos confirmed on Friday.

LAGOS, Aug. 17 () -- A Chinese woman was shot dead by armed robbers on her way back to accommodations in the Nigerian capital of Lagos on Thursday, China's Consulate General in Lagos confirmed on Friday.

The robbery took place at about 8:00 pm local time (1900 GMT) when the victim and three of her colleagues from a Chinese company based in the northeastern Chinese city of Dalian was traveling to their lodgings in Apapa District in Lagos, Nigeria's economic hub at the southeastern seashore, according to the consulate.

After the tragedy, Guo Kun, China's Consul-General in Lagos, visited the victim's family and colleagues and conveyed his condolences and sympathy to them.

On Friday afternoon, Guo went to a police station in Lagos, urging them to crack the case as soon as possible and severely punish the criminals.

Xu Jianguo, Chinese Ambassador in Nigeria, also lodged presentations to the Nigerian side and expressed his condolences to the family of the victim through the Consulate General.

Meanwhile, Xu called on the Chinese people in Nigeria to raise safety awareness and take more precautions measures.

Since June this year, many robberies have happened in Lagos' Ikoyi and Victoria Island, two foreigner-concentrated areas in Lagos which used to be relatively safe.

The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria and China's Consul General in Lagos have issued several security alerts to Chinese citizens in Nigeria.
