OUTSPOKEN lawyer and human rights crusader, Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN) has survived a four-hour surgery for a life-threatening ailment at a London hospital in the United Kingdom (UK).

OUTSPOKEN lawyer and human rights crusader, Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN) has survived a four-hour surgery for a life-threatening ailment at a London hospital in the United Kingdom (UK).

He was operated upon on August 2, 2007 for a serious ailment (details withheld by Daily Champion) and is currently undergoing physiotherapy.

Daily Champion has learnt that he may remain in London for at least the next one month.

Fawehinmi who spoke to Daily Champion on telephone yesterday from the hospital, however said.

"I am responding very well to treatment and currently undergoing physiotherapy."

The legal icon had travelled to London last month for "routine" medical examination.

In the course of the check-up, however, his doctors were reportedly said to have detected the ailment, necessitating the major operation.

Anxiety over his health mounted last Thursday, when the 69-year-old, Ondo-born high chief could not attend the engagement/traditional wedding ceremonies for his daughter, Simbiat and her groom Dr. Olumide Osho, held at the multi-purpose hall of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka.

Barely 48 hours later, Fawehinmi was again absent at the wedding proper held at Archbishop Vining Memorial Cathedral Church, Ikeja, Lagos.

Despite his absence, however, both ceremonies were attended by many eminent Nigerians, including All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) presidential candidate in the April 21, 2007 election retired Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) chairman, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu and CFAO plc chairman Chief Molade Okoya-Thomas.

Others were Nigeria-British Chamber of Commerce president Chief Michael Olawale-Cole, Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) national co-ordinator, Otunba Gani Adams, and Campaign for Democracy (CD) president, Joe Okei-Odumakin.
