Lagos State government has shut down the popular Bariga and Oyingbo markets for poor sanitation habits and non- compliance with its environmental Laws.

In addition, 15 other companies have been served with abatement notices, warning them to either sanitise their premises or be closed down as well.
The state Commissioner for the Environment, Dr. Muiz Banire, who ordered the closure of the two markets, disclosed that the action was taken in order to prevent an outbreak of epidermics that could arise from poor hygiene.

Banire, who expressed concerns about the poor state of the two markets regretted that despite repeated warnings from the state government about the poor sanitation conditions, leaders of the market have not done anything tangible to improve the state of their environment.
Similarly, the state government has sealed up the Mobil Filling Station along Oshodi Express Way in Gbagada due to poor drainage management and blockage of drainage channels.

Also closed down was the Ajaokuta steel Company, at Ogba. The company, apart from the allegation of poor waste management, was also accused of discharging spent oil inside drainage channel.
According to Banire, 'all companies closed down for contravening the state environmental laws would not be re- opened until they satisfy the necessary provisions of the state sanitation laws.

In order to sustain the state government efforts on a clean and sustainable environment, Dr. Banire hinted that the state governor has directed that more beautification projects should be carried out through out the state, especially at roundabouts, loops and other places.
Banire equally disclosed that contractors handling beautification projects of upper and inner Marina, as well as Falomo clover leaf park have been well mobilized, assuring that the area would soon wear a new look in a couple of weeks time.

While calling on individuals, organizations and other corporate entities to join hands with the state government towards the implementation of its sustainable environment project, the commissioner urged residents to shun activities capable of hindering the current efforts of the state government in adding aesthetic value to the state of its environment.
