The DPO who got what he did not bargain for had mobilized his men to quell a riotous situation in the town where youths, armed with A.K.47 rifles and other dangerous weapon had engaged each other in a shooting spree.
Though the cause of the misunderstanding that led to the indiscriminate shooting could not be ascertained at press time, it was however obvious that the rampaging youths numbering about 20 were really on a dangerous mission.
A source who preferred anonimity told Daily Sun that the trigger-happy youths on sighting the DPO and his men, asked him to go back and warned that he should not interfere in their matter.
But the DPO who was bent on ensuring that peace prevailed insisted that the embittered youths should lay down their arms and embrace peace. Sadly, at that point, the police boss became their target as they shattered his legs with bullets and also injured him in the head.
The police boss who is now battling with life at the General Hospital, Ughelli could not speak to newsmen as a team of medical doctors were working round the clock to ensure he survives the bizarre attack.
Leader of the medical personnel at the hospital Dr Pius Diejomaoh, told newsmen that the DPO is responding to treatment, adding that there was no cause for alarm.
However, police Commissioner Dimka in telephone conversation expressed shock over the senseless attack on the DPO by the militants, as he assured that the perpetrators must be brought to justice.
'I am aware of the incident, and I have ordered the dispatch of a team of mobile police force to the town to fish out the hoodlums", said the police boss.
He reminded hoodlums who are still perpetrating criminal acts to flee from Delta as the State is no more safe for them.
'I have warned these hoodlums to steer clear of this State because I am not going to condone their criminal acts," warned Dimka, insisting that the people of the state must continue to sleep with their two eyes closed.
