Nigeria ex-governor gets 2 years' jail for graft


A Nigerian court sentenced a former governor of the oil-producing state of Bayelsa to two years in prison on Thursday after he pleaded guilty to six counts of embezzlement and money-laundering.

A Nigerian court sentenced a former governor of the oil-producing state of Bayelsa to two years in prison on Thursday after he pleaded guilty to six counts of embezzlement and money-laundering.

Diepreye Alamieyeseigha was caught with almost 1 million pounds in cash in his London home in 2005. He skipped bail and returned to Nigeria where state governors have immunity from prosecution.

Shortly after his return, Alamieyeseigha was impeached and stripped of his immunity by the state house of assembly, paving the way for his arrest by anti-corruption police on December 9, 2005. He has been in detention since then.
