Workers in the executive and legislative arms of government would have to wait for a while before enjoying the new pay package
RFMAC chairman, Alhaji Hamma Tukur revealed Thursday that without repealing the 2002 Act on remuneration to workers in the public sector, there was nothing anybody could do to pay the jumbo salaries.
He announced the handicap of his commission to start the implementation when he paid a visit to the Speaker of House of Representatives, Mrs. Patricia Olubunmi Etteh in her office.
Tukur, therefore urged the speaker to expedite action on the matter so that the affected employees could be paid the new salary.
According to him, even the implementation of the new pay package at the states level was impracticable without the repeal of the law.
The revenue commission's boss also made a case for the local governments and the need to adequately fund them, saying that there was no reason why the Paris Club debt should have been paid from the Federation Account, thereby depriving the councils of a whopping sum of $2.4 billion.
Alhaji Tukur also urged the House to specify the amount to be paid to the local governments by the states from their revenues so that the commission would deduct the amount from source if states failed to comply.
Responding, Mrs Etteh said she was ignorant of the fact that the existing act had not been repealed, and pledged that the House would swing into action as soon as the executive arm returned all the pending bills.
The Speaker said that even the lawmakers themselves were not yet aware of how much was due to them in the new package.
