Senate gets ministers' list


With the latest development, , after which screening would commence next Tuesday, provided the upper chamber gets the details of all nominees on or before next Monday.


The Senate finally received the list of ministerial nominees for clearance and confirmation on Wednesday.
This is coming on heels of the declaration by the Senate President, Brigadier-Gen. David Mark (retd), that the Senate would be "thorough" in the screening and approval of ministers.

Mark, who received the envelop containing the list from the Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters, Senator Florence Ita-Giwa, said the Senate would conduct a "transparent and open screening exercise."
Although details of list was still sketchy as at press time, Daily Sun gathered that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) publicity secretary, John Odey, Dayo Adeyeye (Ekiti), Senator Mohammed Sanusi Daggash (Borno), Tokunbo Kayode (Ondo) and Ahmed Mala-madori (Jigawa), immediate past minister of state for energy, PDP national secretary, Chief Ojo Maduekwe, Halimah Alao, Ahmed Garba Bichi, PDP governorship candidate in Kano, are among the 35 nominees that made the final list.

Mark, who said the list was "long awaited," gave an assurance that "we will do justice in the confirmation exercise and we shall be thorough because the nation has been waiting for this list."
Earlier, Ita-Giwa had revealed that the list contains 35 names. She revealed also that the nomination for one of the states has not been concluded.

Ita-Giwa also said, "talks are on-going with the opposition parties, but allowances have been made to accommodate the outcome of these talks. Also, nominees were put through rigorous investigations to ensure that the confirmation exercise would not be problematic.

"I also want to say that this is the authentic list and we have prepared the credentials of all the nominees."
Daily Sun further gathered that another list is expected soon. The list is expected to take care of at least five slots for opposition political parties. The list would also accommodate the states whose nominees were not included in the current list.
