The stealing spree of a three-man gang of armed robbers came to an end in Ibadan, Oyo State, Wednesday night, when the wife of an army sergeant displayed uncommon bravery in attacking one of the hoodlums.
The woman, whose identity was being kept secret by the Oyo State Police Command, was said to have inflicted several machete cuts on the body of one of the notorious robbers during their attempt to rob her household.
Parading the wounded armed robber, Sule Aremu, and one of his accomplices, Remi Ayobami, who were arrested by men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Oyo State, Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr. Jonathan Johnson explained that the gang had already raided three houses and dispossessed occupants of their valuables before the sergeant's wife foiled their operation.
"They had succeeded in robbing three buildings, where they snatched about 10 mobile handsets, 12 wrist watches, about N96, 998 and N45 old notes. They were attempting to enter the fourth house and rob the occupants when the wife of the sergeant boldly used machete and cut Aremu in the chest and on the right hand while he was trying to enter through the window. From there, he pushed the woman and rushed into a toilet.
"The woman raised alarm and by that time, some residents of the area had put up distress calls to the command. The other one (armed robber) was outside mounting security, he had already expended one cartridge. As he was about loading the second one, my men got there and effected their arrest. They claimed that the third member of the gang escaped", the police boss said.
The incident, according to the CP, occurred at Oke Isimi area of Mokola in the capital city of Ibadan.
The wounded robber, Aremu, who was drenched in blood and almost fainting, told newsmen that he and his colleague, now at large, came from Ijebu-Ode to join their accomplice, Ayobami, who resided in Oke-Isimi area, for the operation.
Also paraded yesterday were a fake doctor, Mr. Bola Amoo, and a spiritualist, Mr. Akinsehinwa Famakinwa, who had been illegally operating Kaf Clinic and Maternity Home in the heart of Ibadan for the past 15 years, without any professional training.
