IG's residence: Why Ehindero was kicked out

Former police boss, Mr Sunday Ehindero has explained the circumstances surrounding his ejection from the official quarters of the Inspector General of Police which he bought while still in service.

Former police boss, Mr Sunday Ehindero has explained the circumstances surrounding his ejection from the official quarters of the Inspector General of Police which he bought while still in service.

Ehindero, who spoke through one of his aides on Tuesday amid reports that the acting Inspector General of Police, Sir Mike Okiro had ordered his men to eject him from the mansion, argued that the Federal Government's order was issued for security reasons and not because he did something wrong.

According to Ehindero, the Chief Security Adviser to the President made him understand that in the event of any security scare at the seat of power, anybody living in the controversial mansion might be linked to the plot, because the multi-million Naira security gadgets inside the quarters at 39, Katsina Ala Crescent, Maitama District, Abuja could pick conversations in sensitive places.

The aide told Daily Sun that government had promised to give Ehindero another building as a compensation. He described the former IG as a loyal servant, who is "still part and parcel of the government."

A Federal Government letter marked SH/COS/25/37/341, signed by the Chief of Staff to the President, Major General A. Mohammed (rtd), and dated June 22, 2007 had ordered Ehindero to vacate the house, stating that if it had been sold to him, the sale should be revoked because the building is an institutional house.

Copies of the letter, addressed to the Chairman Federal Capital Territory Transition Committee, FCDA Secretariat, Area 11, Garki, Abuja and entitled: ‘Official Residence of the IGP', were sent to the National Security Adviser and the acting Inspector General of Police, who had directed the Works Department at Louis Edet House, Abuja to ensure that the order is carried out.
