Former Lagos Commissioner for Works and Action Congress (AC) governorship candidate in Osun State during the last April election, Mr Rauf Aregbesola, has raised an alarm over an alleged grand design to assassinate him.
Aregbesola, at a press conference in Lagos Wednesday, alleged that 10 specially trained assassins have been put together to carry out the assignment, while he fingered the State Governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, as the mastermind of the plot.
His words: 'Unimpeachable intelligence available to me indicated that Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola gathered together ten specially trained assassins in the home of his elder brother where he gave the directive that I must be assassinated between yesterday and Saturday."
Aregbesola further alleged that the overseas trip of the governor was to create an excuse that he was not in the country when the dastardly act was perpetrated, explaining that 'the assassination team he had raised is substantially made up of those who he trained and freely used during the Abacha years."
He also revealed that the state Commissioner of Police, Usman Fakai, has recalled his armed guards, describing the sudden withdrawal as 'instructive and not happenstance."
Going down the memory lane, Aregbesola said 'when there was a bomb blast last week in Osogbo, I immediately issued a statement commiserating with the families of the victim while admonishing the police to go the whole hog in unveiling the mystery behind the unprecedented act", expressing surprise that 'hardly had I issued the statement than Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola responded, branding me and the Action Congress (AC) the perpetrators of this clearly heinous crime.'
He also reminded that 'when the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman in Osun State, Alhaji Ademola Rasaq was attacked by armed men, at the end of which two mobile police guards were brutally gunned down, Oyinlola's government did not waste much time in branding us and my party, AC perpetrators of such malfeasance," suspecting that all these accusations were plot to call a dog a bad name to hang it.
Aregbesola therefore said he decided 'to cry out for the world to know Oyinlola's grand plans to eliminate me so as to render the tribunal exercise irrelevant" wondering, 'how would I be causing chaos when I have taken my case to the tribunal over the mandate freely and overwhelmingly given to me."
While asserting that he has a good case before the tribunal and that there was no cause for him to disturb the peace of his people, Aregbesola called on the police 'to make thorough investigation of crimes in the state since 2005 so as to clear their image as the true defenders of the masses of this country."
