Anthony Olubunmi Okogie popularly known as Cardinal Okogie was born on June 16, 1936. Cardinal Okogie is a native of Uromi in Edo State. His father, an Esan is of the royal family while his
mother is a Yoruba.

Cardinal Okogie was ordained a Catholic Priest on December 11, 1966. In 1971, Cardinal Okogie was ordained titular Bishop of Mascula and Auxiliary Bishop of Oyo. In 1973, he was named an Archbishop. As an Archbishop Cardinal Okogie was the president of the Christian Association of Nigeria(CAN) from 1994 to 2000.

Cardinal Okogie was proclaimed Cardinal on October 21, 2003 by Pope John Paul II and he holds the title of Cardinal Priest of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mt. Carmel of Mostacciano. It is worthy to note that Cardinal Okogie was one of the Cardinal Electors who participated in the 2005 Papal Conclave that selected Pope Benedict XVI and 2013 Papal Conclave that selected Pope Francis.

Cardinal Okogie having reached the age limit of 75years resigned from the pastoral governance of the See of Lagos, which resignation was accepted on May 25, 2012.

Cardinal Okogie has been a staunch defender of the Catholic church’s laws on celibacy for catholic priests and the Church’s stand on the evil use of Contraceptives. Hence in 2007, he condemned the government’s approval of a condom factory.
