The “Up Nepa” phrase which is popular among Nigerians to celebrate the restoration of electricity, has been used by some residents in Texas after they got back electricity in the area following days of blackout.

In a video that has since gone viral on social media, some Nigerians were seen dancing for joy and chanting the phrase following the restoration of electricity.

NEWS DIRECT reports that Texas has witnessed extreme winter weather which affected the state’s energy grid, causing power and water outages since Monday.

Citizens who got water were advised to boil for drinking, due to power outage, at the state’s largest water treatment plant was also affected. Texans are also struggling with food as grocery stores are running out of supply and battling with storage.

Texas governor Greg Abbott tweeted on Thursday assuring citizens that power would be restored.

“About 1,600,000 homes have had power restored today. Current power generation is restoring an additional 200,000 homes every hour,” he said.

In a swift move, US President Joe Biden has declared a state of emergency in Texas and authorised the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to provide generators.

Meanwhile, Texas senator Ted Cruz has been criticised for going on vacation with his family to Mexico amid the crisis.

The senator claimed he booked the vacation for his young daughters who “asked to take a trip with friends”.
