Prostitution began many centuries ago, as a way for women to earn money. Saloons in Europe used to be known for their beautiful women and liquor. Over the yearâ's prostitution has become a threat to our society.
In Nigeria today, prostitution has evolved from being practiced by women only; we know have male prostitutes, who parade themselves shamelessly as the females do. Gone are those days when prostitutes hide or apply some decency to in the way they hawk themselves. They now practice the trade with impunity, in some cases with encouragement from their parents, society, authorities andfriends. Thus the high rate of deaths through sexually transmitted diseases HIV/AIDS inclusive.
Many blame their sojourn into the trade on unemployment and poverty which is not entirely true. For greed and much love for easy riches play a greater role. A morally upright person will not trade his or dignity for money. Is there any amount of money worth one`s dignity?
The injunctions in both holy books (Quran and bible) against prostitution clearly states the stigma attached to prostitution in this life and the hereafter.
Islamic law explicitly prohibits adultery and fornication as clearly mentioned in the following Qur` anic injunctions: Nor come nigh to adultery: for it is a shameful (deed) and an evil, opening the road to other evils” (Quran 17:32)
“The man and woman guilty of adultery or fornication, flog each of them with a hundred stripes: let no compassion move you in their case, in a matter prescribed by Allah, if you believed in Allah and the last day: and let a party of believers witness their punishment (QUR`AN 24:2)
Adultery, fornication and other promiscuous sex practices are punishable in Islam, because they are indeed serious crimes which affect the entire society.
The bible says the following on prostitution: Indeed prostitution has always been a common way for women to make money even in the bible times. The bible says that prostitution is immoral.proverb23:27-28 says “for a prostitute is a deep pit and a wayward wife is a narrow well. Like a bandit she lies in wait, and multiplies the unfaithful among men.”
God forbids involvement with prostitutes because he knows such involvement is detrimental to both men and women. “For the lips of an immoral woman drips honey, and her mouth is smoother than oil; But in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two edged sword. Her feet go down to death, her steps lay hold of hell” (Proverbs 5:3-5 nkjv).
Prostitution not only destroys marriages, families and lives, but it destroys the spirit and soul in a way that leads to physical and spiritual death.
A Questions was asked by a columnist recently, she asked “Do these girls calculate the risk they take each day? With ritualist prowling about, the insults, and perharps beatings, the degradation, diseases, etc.is it worth the pittance they are paid? How does one live this double life? You assume a new role, new personality as soon as you take off that garment of chastity and honour nature bestowed on you. You become different an individual. Your names now are prostitute, call girl, ashawo, karuwa to mention a few.”
The only solution to the increasing menace of prostitution is for us` to look innate and change our desire on worldly things, which even if gained through such immoral and ungodly ways, will bring no satisfaction.
Parents and the society should inculcate into the minds of the youths, the dangers associated with prostitution and its effect on human dignity.
Though prostitution due to poverty or unemployment is unjustifiable, the government should come up with effective measures to curb poverty and unemployment amongst the youths, so as to help those who claim they ventured into the trade due to poverty.
Prostitution for whichever reason is degrading, dehumanizing and the highest indignity a human being can bring unto self.
