Nigeria Bo! Not so fast. Some of us care--cares alot about Nigeria and its people. A lot of us don't pretend to be democrats like the President. And, most of us genuinely believe that Nigeria is relevant and its relevancy extends to every facet of our lives.  It is who we are, what makes us unique and highly respected amongst our peers. Most of us wear the barge of being a Nigerian with pride, notwithstanding the naferious conducts of some Nigerians. These conducts, too, in a weird way, sets us apart from the rest of the crowd.  We also have fought a nasty civil war and have come through it better than most countries. We have survived countless military regimes. Through all of these, we hoped and prayed for a Democracy--with a National Assembly, a Constitution and all of the trappings that comes with a democratic society, including the rule of law and obedience to the rule of law. Nigerians have died fighting for these privileges.
Finally, we got the military guys to lets us go down this Democracy path again, and they agreed. Now, bear in mind, this 'compromise' was not easily attained. It took some cajoling, hand twisting and the proverbial handwriting on the wall if this dream of a democracy is thwarted and prolonged by the military. I guess, you can say, that even the obtuse military leaders understood when the 'natives' becames restless, metaphorically speaking, and sensed that a change was coming. The rest they say is history.

Now, we have our wish except we ended up electing the least democractic individual in Nigeria, President Olusegun Obasanjo. Alright, we can't get every thing we wish for in life, but this aberration either is God's joke to Nigeria or punishments to Nigerian for the many sins that we have committed. We would like to believe that God did not intend to continue this punishment on us, and good people both in Nigeria and abroad came out and opposed every effort that President Obasanjo made to stay in office for another term, so far. We, as God fearing Nigerians, would hope that this man's bid for a third term died with the Senate rejecting this bill. But, everything I have come to know about President Obasanjo through the many years he has served the Nigerian public has thought me that he's an opportunist and slippery, and needs to be watched, closely!

Now, before we close this ugly chapter in Nigeria's history, one question remains, were many of the Senators and House of Rep. members that supported the bid for a third term bid supporting this Bid out of personal conviction or out of committing a crime by being 'on the take' to support this colossal mistake? It is our hope that this question should be foremost in the mind of the next government in addition to cleaning up Nigeria and reducing unemployment.
